Winter Wardrobe Essentials List
In a well-curated winter capsule, you’ll find cozy outerwear like a sleek puffer or classic wool coat, soft knit sweaters, versatile tops, jeans, off-white pants or tailored trousers, leggings, and a chic slip skirt that works perfectly for the holiday season. Add in your everyday winter boots, Chelsea or ankle boots, a beanie, gloves, and minimal accessories, and you’ll be amazed at how many stylish outfit combinations you can create with just a few key pieces.
If you work from home or are a stay-at-home mom, you can lean into more relaxed and comfortable essentials. Or, if your lifestyle is more social or professional, you might prefer to include a few dressier options.
Below I’m laying out all the pieces I chose for this capsule, including alternatives at different price points, and the intentionality behind each one!
Long Wool Coat
A long, warm wool coat is a great staple for any winter capsule. Depending on the climate where you live, you may want to go with a thicker wool coat or one that is more lightweight. I love this stunning wrap coat from Aritzia which is great for layering as well as this great, more affordable alternative from Quince.
This piece can be dressed down with a pair of Chelsea boots and casual pants or dressed up with a slip skirt and heeled ankle boots or pumps. Because winter gets quite chilly, this layering piece is a polished way to handle the elements and look fantastic doing it.
As an alternative, if you like the look you can go with a Teddy-style coat or this Alpaca number from Quince.
shop coats:
Aritzia Portfolio Double-Faced Coat // $398.00
Quince Double-Faced Merino Wool Wrap Coat // $200.00
Zara LONG BELTED WOOL COAT // $179.00
Parka or Puffer Coat
Winter is cold and sometimes unpredictable! If you live in a northern area like myself, you’re likely used to some snowstorms. The best way to look chic and still weather the cold is with a cozy puffer. I love the Superpuff Parka from Aritzia and a great affordable look-alike is this Long Puffer from Quince.
You can easily tailor this piece to match the kind of winters you experience. If you’re facing months of snow and subzero temperatures, a long, heavyweight puffer coat is essential. If your winters are milder with little to no snow, choose a shorter or lighter puffer for a more versatile option.
shop puffers:
Quince Responsible Down Long Puffer Jacket // $200.00
Aritzia The Super Puff™ Long // $398.00
Zara WATER REPELLENT HOODED PUFFER JACKET // $79.90
Fleece Jacket
A cozy fleece jacket is the perfect transitional piece for when winter is just beginning and there’s still a hint of fall in the air. Or, opt for a long length that offers a little extra warmth when you’re sitting outdoors on chilly days.
I’m loving this soft, thermal fleece jacket from Aritzia that you can wear on its own or layer under a wool coat when the temperature drops.
shop fleeces:
Aritzia Polartec Thermal Pro Raglan Zip-up // $128.00
Aritzia Snowdrop Zip-up // $88.00
Quince Sherpa Snap Front Jacket // $70.00
Striped Knit Crewneck
Including a few knit sweaters in your winter 2026 capsule is a smart move. Aim for two or three in different styles, like a relaxed crewneck, a cozy half-zip, or a flattering v-neck to give you plenty of outfit options.
This season, I’m drawn to striped knits for a bit of visual interest, but you can never go wrong with timeless neutrals. I absolutely love this classic striped pullover (or this one with thick stripes) but neutral tones are great as well – like this affordable striped pullover from Quince.
shop crewnecks:
Aritzia Isabelle Wool Cashmere Sweater // $168.00
La Ligne Marin Sweater // $350.00
Quince 100% Organic Cotton Striped Crew Sweater // $49.90
Turtleneck Sweater
Along with a basic knit pullover, a classic turtleneck sweater is another essential in a winter capsule. Dark espresso brown has been very on-trend this year and continues to be, I love this plush brown Cashmere Turtleneck from Aritzia, and this stunning ribbed cashmere option from Quince.
On a chilly day, you can put on a cozy turtleneck then layer with one of the outerwear pieces. Like the pullovers, I recommend you go with a fabric weight that makes sense for the climate you are in. Thick wool may be too hot for those in mild areas, so go for a cashmere or cotton blend.
shop turtlenecks:
Aritzia Plush Cashmere Oversized Turtleneck // $278.00
Quince Cashmere Fisherman Turtleneck Sweater // $119.90
Zara CONTRAST PIPING KNIT SWEATER // $69.90
Knit Cardigan
A cozy knit cardigan is a winter essential that works for just about any occasion. I love layering mine over a fitted tank, a long-sleeve tee, or dressy satin top. For a casual vibe, I’ll pair it with jeans or dress it up with a sleek slip skirt for something a little more refined.
If you have the budget, invest in this stunning Jenni Kayne Cooper cardigan. It’s definitely a splurge, but worth every penny. For a more affordable yet equally beautiful option, this Structured Cashmere Cardigan from Quince is the perfect alternative!
Whether you’re lounging at home or need an extra layer heading out, a cardigan is a great throw-on-and-go piece.
shop cardigans:
Quince Cashmere Structured Cardigan // $159.90
Jenni Kayne Cooper Cardigan // $420.00
Aritzia Meraki Merino Wool Cardigan // $168.00
Aritzia London Wool Cashmere Cardigan // $178.00
Knit Half-Zip
Probably one of my most worn winter pieces, a knit half-zip sweater always keeps me feeling cozy yet has an elevated look compared to a basic sweatshirt. I love the affordable Quince Cashmere Half-Zip as well as this splurge option, theJenni Kayne knit half-zip.
Style the half-zip with a pair of jeans, leggings, or trousers. Add a pair of boots and you’ll be ready for any winter day!
shop half-zips:
Quince Cashmere Fisherman Quarter Zip Sweater // $119.90
H&M Rib-Knit Half-Zip Sweater // $49.99
Jenni Kayne Cashmere Half Zip // $495.00
Long Sleeve Tops/Bodysuit
Basic long-sleeve tops are wardrobe staples that can be worn multiple times a week in the winter with an extra layer over top. I love ivory or off-white, melange grey, or beige to brighten up winter looks and keep them versatile.
In terms of fabric, pima cotton is excellent, but you can also go more elevated with cashmere blends. I’ve linked my faves below!
shop long-sleeves:
Aritzia HomeStretch Rib Crew Longsleeve // $38.00
Quince Cotton Cashmere Ribbed Long Sleeve Sweater // $39.90
Quince Featherweight Cashmere Ribbed Crewneck Sweater // $69.90
H&M Pima Cotton Top // $39.99
Dressy Tops
A well-rounded winter capsule wardrobe should have one or two dressy tops for nights out and special occasions (especially with the holiday season in full swing!) In the capsule, I chose to include this notched silk long sleeve top from Quince with a business-casual vibe, and this more sultry satin halter top from Aritzia (holiday party here we come!).
The dressy shirt option is very much dependant on your lifestyle and personal style. You could do a lace overlay top, simple satin button up, or go with sequins if you’ll wear that enough during the winter season!
shop dressy tops:
Aritzia Martini Satin Blouse // $88.00
Quince Washable Stretch Silk Notch Collar Blouse// $79.90
Zara ZW COLLECTION LACE CAMISOLE TOP // $69.90
Sleeveless Knit
Another great, versatile piece in the winter capsule is a sleeveless knit top. It is the ultimate layering hero!
This top can add texture and polish under cardigans and coats without the bulk of long sleeves. Perfect for indoor settings or mild winter days, it strikes that balance between cozy and refined. and is an easy way to look put-together while staying comfortable.
Below are some of my favorite options!
shop sleevless knits:
Aritzia Feather Cashmere Relaxed Turtleneck Tank // $148.00
Quince Cashmere Mock Neck Sweater Vest // $59.90
J.Crew Brushed cashmere turtleneck sweater shell // $158.00
Vintage Wash Jeans
There’s nothing more versatile than a classic pair of blue jeans. And trust me when I say, once you find the perfect pair, you’ll wear them multiple times a week.
My personal faves are the Levi’s 501’s, Agolde 90’s jeans, and Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans.Everlane and Citizens of Humanity are also all fantastic brands to choose from.
If you are looking for budget friendly denim, H&M has some great styles as well!
shop jeans:
Levi’s 501 ’90s Jeans // $98.00
Madewell The Perfect Vintage Jean // $150.00
Levi’s 501 ’90s Selvedge Jeans // $138.00
Dark Wash Jeans
Like vintage-wash or medium-blue jeans, dark-wash jeans are perfect for the winter season. Not only do they match the vibe for dark winters, they are sleek and classic and can more easily be dressed up than light-wash denim.
I’m currenlty in love with these lower rise Citizens of Humanity Anissa jeans in the dark wash (size down 1-2 sizes), but I’ve also linked a couple other great (more affordable) alternatives above!
shop dark jeans:
Madewell Longline Straight Jeans // $148.00
Citizens of Humanity Anissa Low Rise Straight Jean // $238.00
Zara HIGH WAIST COMFORT MOM FIT JEANS // $49.90
Madewell The Darted Barrel Leg Jeans // $148.00
Off-White Jeans or Trousers
While you might not be sure about the light off-white or ivory color in winter, it totally works to freshen up any cold-weather outfit. I love the look of a monochromatic winter outfit with an ivory cardigan and off-white denim, paired with black boots and a bag. The contrast is chic and elevated.
If your wardrobe leans dressier, instead of off-white jeans, go for a pair of ivory tailored trousers. I’ve linked both options below!
shop jeans/trousers:
Madewell The Darted Barrel-Leg Jean // $138.00
Levi’s 501 ’90s Jean // $98.00
Quince Stretch Crepe Pleated Wide Leg Pants // $69.90
The Effortless Pant Crepette™ // $158.00
Leggings
Black leggings are a true winter capsule essential because they’re comfortable, flattering, and endlessly versatile.
They’re perfect for days when you want to look put-together with minimal effort, pairing seamlessly with oversized sweaters, cozy knits, or structured coats. Whether you’re running errands, traveling, or relaxing at home, a high-quality pair made from thick, structured fabric will keep you warm while still looking sleek and refined.
shop leggings:
Aritzia Butter Cheeky Infinite Hi-rise 28” Legging // $88.00
Quince Ultra-Form High-Rise Crossover Legging // $39.90
Lululemon Fast and Free High-Rise Thermal Tight 28″ // $128.00
Slip Skirt
For dressier holiday season-friendly looks, a slip skirt in a beautiful champagne color is perfect! You can wear this piece with a camisole, turtleneck, or cardigan and go with heels or heeled ankle boots.
Quince has very well-priced silk skirts in an array of colors, or you can go with these satin options from Aritiza. If champagne isn’t your color, try deep green, navy, burgundy, or black.
shop slip skirts:
Quince 100% Washable Silk Maxi Skirt // $79.90
Zara SATIN EFFECT LACE MIDI SKIRT // $49.90
Aritzia Slip Satin Maxi Skirt // $98.00
Winter Boots
In the winter it’s likely you’ll encounter snow (unless you are lucky enough to live in a no-snow locale!), therefore a chic pair of winter boots are a must when it comes to the footwear in your capsule. On extra cold days, you’ll want a warm and cozy winter boot to slip your feet into, so I recommend going with a pair that’s shearling lined.
Don’t forget to make sure the boots you get are waterproof too. And, if you go with suede, get a waterproof specific suede or use a suede protector spray to keep them from getting dirty.
shop winter boots:
La Canadienne DWAYNE SHEARLING-LINED SUEDE BOOTIE // $485.00
Hunter Esme Lug Sole Waterproof Snow Bootie // $225.00
Blondo Faux Shearling Cuff Waterproof Boot // $159.95
Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots are another great option for the winter months. They are typically water and snow-proof, and look sharp with so many different outfits.
I love these stylish and durable Chelsea Boots from Poppy Barley, as well as this budget-friendly pair from Sam Edelman. You’ll likely find you are wearing these boots almost all the time during the winter unless it’s super snowy and cold where you live.
shop chelsea boots:
Sam Edelman Laguna Waterproof Lug Sole Chelsea Boot // $160.00
Zara CHELSEA ANKLE BOOTS // $129.00
Poppy Barley Decade Chelsea Boot Black Water Resistant // $425.00
Zara SUEDE LOW HEEL ANKLE BOOTS // $119.00
Ankle Boots or Knee-High Boots
I love how heeled ankle boots can instantly elevate even the simplest winter outfit. They’re my go-to when I want to look a little more polished, whether it’s for dinner out or a casual day when I just want to feel put-together.
I usually reach for this classic ankle-height pair or these brown boots with a slightly more casual feel, but knee-high boots are perfect if you want something a bit more statement-making. I’m especially drawn to classic black, rich brown leather and camel suede this season. And if you choose suede (which I often do), don’t forget a good protective spray as it makes all the difference.
shop heeled boots:
Poppy Barley Toujours Boot Black // $398.00
Quince Italian Leather Stretch Sock Bootie // $164.00
Zara SPLIT LEATHER KITTEN HEEL ANKLE BOOTS // $129.00
Zara WIDE HEEL BOOTS // $129.00
Sneakers
While the practicality of sneakers in the winter may depend on where you live, I still recommend a pair! I live where it snows, a lot, but still find myself reaching for sneakers often when it’s not too mucky outside! I love to pair sneakers with wool socks and leggings or jeans for a more sporty or casual winter outfit.
My favorite pair are these New Balance 530’s, they are so comfortable and cute!
shop sneakers:
New Balance 530 // $109.99
Air Max Moto 2K Sneaker // $135.00
Gender Inclusive XT-Whisper Sneaker // $97.99
Leather Tote Bag
In my opinion, a large leather tote is the ultimate finishing touch for a winter capsule wardrobe. It’s practical, minimal, and effortlessly chic (exactly what a capsule piece should be). I tend to gravitate toward black, brown, or taupe leather, since they pair beautifully with any outfit and feel timeless for the season.
Think of it as your go-to catch-all bag for winter days. I’m a big fan of this luxury leather Lisboa tote from Poppy Barley, and this affordable leather tote from Quince is excellent too.
I’ve linked more excellent options!
shop totes:
Poppy Barley The Lisboa Tote Black // $350.00
OAK + FORT SLOANE TOTE // $84.00
Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Shopper Tote // $149.90
Crossbody Bag
A crossbody bag is another must-have for a winter capsule wardrobe. It instantly makes any outfit look more polished while being far more convenient to carry than a large tote. Again for the sake of versatility I recommend sticking with a neutral hue such as black or brown.
If you’re looking to splurge, the Vancouver Bag from DeMellier is an elegant investment piece you’ll carry for years. For something more affordable, the Italian Leather Box Bag from Quince is a chic and timeless option that still feels elevated.
shop crossbody bags:
Dolce Vita Faux Leather & Suede Crossbody Bag // $198.00
Quince Italian Leather Box Shoulder Bag // $154.00
Zara CROSSBODY BAG WITH METAL DETAIL // $55.90
Clutch
Because the winter season often brings holiday parties, gatherings, and nights out – a clutch is the perfect addition to the capsule for these dressy occasions. I chose this simple gold clutch, but the options are endless. This Quince pouch clutch/crossbody combo is another one of my faves.
Opt for classic black, metallic, or suede, whatever you feel will go seamlessly with more outfits in your capsule.
shop clutches:
Olga Berg Precious Metallic Box Clutch // $85.00
Quince Italian Leather Pouch Crossbody Clutch // $129.90
Bellaria Frame Clutch // $99.00
Nina Emmy Clutch // $78.00
Accessories
Last but definitely not least…the cherry on top of every outfit! Adding a selection of stylish and practical accessories to your winter capsule wardrobe will tie it all together.
I recommend a cozy beanie or toque, a warm oversized scarf, leather gloves, a great pair of sunglasses, wool socks, a classic belt, and classic jewelry. You can never go wrong with subtle, classic pieces that are the cherry on top of every great winter ensemble.
shop accessories:
Aritzia Beanie // $78.00
Poppy Barley Accent Belt Silver Black // $95.00
Quince Cashmere Lined Leather Gloves // $48.00
Mejuri Fine Crew Dôme Huggies // $68.00
Outfit Inspiration
If you’re anything like me, you probably love seeing how all the pieces in a capsule actually come together! So, I’ve put together some of my favorite winter capsule outfits to give you a little inspiration.
Whether you’re getting dressed for a cozy weekend at home, a day at the office, or a night out, these looks show how easy it is to mix and match your capsule pieces to create effortless, stylish outfits all season long.
What’s NOT included in the winter capsule wardrobe?
The following items don’t necessarily change a whole lot from season to season and can be worn all year round, therefore I have not included these in the capsule. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t mix them with the items in your capsule to create even more outfit combinations!
- undergarments (bras, panties, socks, etc.)
- pajamas
- loungewear (sweats, hoodies, etc.)
- workout wear (sports bras, tank tops, etc.)
