Ahead are gorgeous autumn-inspired colors, from soft, understated tones to dark, alluring hues, not to mention a few bold standout choices. So, no matter which aesthetic you lean towards, one (or more) of the shades below will be perfect for your September nails. 

1. Cool Espresso

If there’s a season for dark, rich brown tones, it’s fall. From creamy milk chocolate nail polish to soft shades of caramel, these dramatic, earthy brown hues are nostalgic and inviting. Exactly what you need when the air gets that autumn chill. For the fall of 2026, espresso is the particular shade that we’ll be seeing plenty of. 

Celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen spoke with fashion editors at Marie Claire, stating that in 2026 “cocoa and espresso shades are getting a chilled-out update, with less warmth and a softer, cooler finish.“ And espresso, with its ultra-dark, almost black aesthetic, is perfect for a moody, cool-toned pop of color. 

Use it for traditional solid nails, simple French tips, or a modern, trendier design (like the one by @kuypernailart). This versatile hue will certainly help you get into the fall mood while elevating your overall aesthetic. 

2. Red Velvet

Style experts at Bustle dished the details on New York Fashion Week, giving us all we need to know about our upcoming fall and winter season. According to them, “Red lips matched velvety crimson manicures at Pamella Roland, honing in on the collection’s high-glam mood.“ So, it’s safe to say that shades of dreamy red velvet are sure to make their way from the catwalk into everyday life.

Cat-eye, in particular, will be the trendiest finish to pair with this bright red, as velvety texture and shimmering magnetic detailing were seen on more than one model’s hand at Fashion Week. You can take inspiration from Ramon for this one, as his design (to the left) is a perfect recreation of designs seen at the show. However, don’t feel restricted here. Fashion is forever evolving, and any variation of red velvet manicures is sure to stun in autumn. 

For something equally luminous, opt for a chrome powder or ultra-fine glitter topcoat. If you prefer something charming yet minimalistic, stick with a classic, radiant red velvet tone and high-gloss finish, like the design by @manucurist. 

3. Burnt Olive

PANTONE, a go-to brand for all things color, shared its own picks for the shades to watch this fall. They’ve also drawn inspiration from NYFW, selecting the hues that made an impact and defined each collection. One of the colors they’ve got their eye on is a deep, earthy burnt olive. 

Muted shades of green are common among autumn wardrobes and accessories, but this specific shade of olive is a dark, near-neutral color. Burnt olive has a strong grey undertone, making it more versatile and moodier than traditional olive tones. It’s perfect for a touch of grounding color, and its subdued, cool aesthetic makes it easy to pair with any palette. 

I am obsessed with the croc-inspired print by @nailsocietyy, and it’s perfect for rocking more than one fall trend. Alternatively, Hollie used it for a simple manicure that’s bold yet refined, while the velvety mani in the center adds subtle charm. 

4. Muted Pink

For the girls who love donning a pretty shade of pink year-round, don’t stress. There’s a September nail color on my list for you too!

Cosmo recently ranked the most popular OPI nail polish colors, including a soft, muted pink perfect for autumn. As the editors at Cosmo say, this hue is ideal for “a neutral manicure without veering into overly beige or overly pink territory” and a “universally flattering shade.“ They’re talking about OPI’s Barefoot in Barcelona, a dusty yet rich and rosy hue. 

I love this for something soft and sweet in fall, but it really still has an autumn vibe. It has the perfect understated appeal without sacrificing feminine charm, and it’s perfect for anything from a solid mani to a sheer topcoat or a fall botanical design. 

5. Smoky Charcoal

Smoky nail colors are already trending in 2026, and for September, the ultimate dark, smoky shade will be one of the most popular. Charcoal is the nail polish shade I’m referring to, of course. It’s perfect for fall, even early in the season, and it has a daring, moody appeal that’s drool-worthy. 

This was another shade named one of the best NYFW nail looks by Bustle. Editor Emma Stout wrote, “Smoky eyes were a standout makeup trend at NYFW, and nails followed suit. Instead of opaque black, these manicures leaned into diffused charcoal tones and shadowy finishes […] The vibe? Soft goth at its chicest.“

For this, you can choose an all-over nail design for something alluring or add a touch of charcoal to keep it minimal. The charcoal-chrome mani by San Sung and the velvet charcoal nails by Amber are definitely my favorite here. 

6. Red Mahogany

Next on my list of September nail colors is gorgeous red mahogany. Another color trend spotted along the runways at NYFW by PANTONE, this shade is deep and luxurious.

Red mahogany is a dark, muted shade of red, with strong brown undertones. Ideal for something sultry and dramatic, it will certainly add an autumnal vibe to your September outfits. I love this elegant nail polish for an old-money aesthetic, and it would definitely be my go-to for a formal fall event. The left and center nail designs, by Stacey and Samantha, respectively, are perfect examples of that. However, it’s just as suitable for a whimsical, seasonal design. 

7. Toasted Taupe

If you’re looking for a warm, traditional fall neutral, this next pick is for you. 

Southern Living dropped their list of the best nail polish colors for each month earlier this year, and they definitely nailed it for September. “A toasty neutral such as taupe is a great choice to start your transition from summer into fall. The earthy color balance still complements any lingering glow, while also being versatile for your first forays into fall activities.“

This shade is soft but still earthy and inviting. It’s something that pairs easily with any fall outfit, sophisticated enough for days at the office but still pumpkin-picking ready. I love this color paired with a shimmery velvet topcoat (see the mani by Ramon above). Alternatively, it looks just as gorgeous with chrome (@_ivynailart nailed this). If you want to pair a splash of color with this neutral, recreate Aiste’s manicure for a gorgeous autumn ombre featuring toasted taupe. 

8. Pumpkin Polish

The last pick on my list of September nails is no surprise, but it’s surely a perfect polish for fall. Pumpkin orange nail polish is traditional yet still bold, with a playful holiday vibe. L’Officiel reported this as a fall color to keep on your radar, stating that “Pumpkin orange is the ultimate seasonal hue designed to be the vivid touch that elevates any look–from accessories to clothing.”

Because this color naturally has a bold, eye-catching appeal, it’s perfect for daring nail designs. A seasonal pumpkin-spiced aura mani (I love the one by @avrnailswatches) or a swirling cat-eye pumpkin design (hello @vviki.mani) is alluring and full of autumn charm. I also highly recommend reaching for pumpkin nail polish if you plan to create a fall-inspired collage design, as it pairs effortlessly with shades of brown, black, cream, and even deep green.
