My Neutral Capsule Summer Wardrobe

With spring wrapping up, summer is right around the corner—making it the ideal moment to put together your 2025 summer capsule wardrobe.

If you love a chic, neutral aesthetic and are looking to simplify your wardrobe or embrace a more minimalist approach, my capsule guide is here to help you on your journey!

Below, you’ll find a detailed overview of the steps to building your perfect capsule, learn about the pieces I chose for my summer wardrobe, plus 20+ outfit ideas you can create using them!

How Do You Start A Summer Capsule Wardrobe?

One of the best things about a capsule wardrobe? It’s completely customizable to you—your lifestyle, your vibe, and what your summer days actually look like. If you’re ready to build your ideal minimalist summer capsule, here’s a simple game plan:

  • First, think about your day-to-day in the summer. Are you going to the office, lounging poolside, chasing kids, or hopping between brunch and errands? This will help you figure out which types of pieces should take center stage—maybe more breezy dresses, polished workwear, or comfy-casual staples.
  • Next, clear out your closet! Tuck away all those cozy fall and winter layers into storage bins. You can stash them on a high shelf or in a spare room until it’s time to build your fall capsule later.
  • Declutter what’s left. Now that you’re left with your warm-weather wardrobe, it’s time to declutter (here’s how). Keep it simple, keep it intentional. Use my summer capsule checklist to help you sort through what stays, what goes, and what you might need to shop for.

What’s In The Capsule?

Below, you’ll find all the pieces I’ve included in my 2025 summer capsule wardrobe, along with why each one earns its spot as a seasonal must-have. This list is built with a minimalist approach in mind, but feel free to tweak it to suit your lifestyle and personal style!

Linen Blazer or Lightweight Jacket

To start, this lightweight linen blazer or light jacket (I love this one from Aritzia) is a go-to layering piece for summer. It adds a touch of polish and looks great with everything from jeans or shorts to sandals and a simple tank.

Throw it on over a midi skirt or dress with sneakers for an easy, casual look—or dress it up for a summer wedding by pairing it with a flowy dress and heels.

Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is a must-have in any summer capsule—it’s the perfect piece to transition your outfits from daytime to evening. Whether you go for a timeless blue wash or opt for white or cream for a more summery feel, it’s a super versatile layer.

I’m especially loving this slightly oversized one from Quince and this classic Levi’s denim jacket—they instantly elevate any outfit! If a denim jacket feels to heavy, try this denim shirt from Aritzia

Button-Up Shirts

In my opinion, a crisp white linen or drapey cotton button-up is a non-negotiable capsule wardrobe essential. It’s light, breathable, and endlessly versatile. I also love having a striped version on hand—it adds a bit of variety and pairs effortlessly with denim, white, or black bottoms.

Button-ups are super easy to dress up or down, and in an oversized fit, they look great worn loose over jeans or tucked into shorts or trousers. Bonus: they double as the perfect beach cover-up over your swimsuit!

These Quince linen button-ups are a great price and come in many colors!

Striped Sweater(s)

For those cooler summer days or evenings, having one or two crewneck sweaters on hand is my suggestion. If you’re in a cooler climate, go for something cozy like cashmere. But if your summers stay warm, lightweight options like cotton or a linen blend are perfect.

I’m especially obsessed with a classic white striped knit – it’s so timeless! My top picks are this budget-friendly Quince Striped Cotton Crewneck, the equally affordable Quince Cashmere Crewneck, J.Crew’s best-selling Roll-neck Cotton Sweater (often on sale!), and the gorgeous Jenni Kayne Chloe Sweater—a splurge, but worth it if you have the budget!

Knit Cardigan

Never underestimate the power of a great cardigan in summer. It’s perfect layered over a t-shirt, tank top, dress, or midi skirt.

I absolutely love the Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan (investment), the La Ligne Mini Toujours Cashmere Cardigan (moderate price), and the Quince Cropped Cashmere Cardigan (budget-friendly). All three are perfect choices for summer!

You can also opt for this budget-friendly cotton cardigan and/or linen cardigan if you prefer one that doesn’t give as much warmth.

Neutral T-Shirt(s)

A neutral t-shirt (or a few!) is a staple in a summer capsule. I love wearing lightweight tees in the summer that I can easily dress up or down. My favorites are the Air Tee (so light and comfy!), the Aritiza function tee (thick and soft) and the Box-Cut Tee from Everlane

For versatility and comfort cotton or linen t-shirts are great choices, and go for a neutral tone, muted color (like blue or butter yellow), or go for stripes!

Linen Vest Top

Linen waistcoats (aka vests) have had a major “moment” over the last couple of years, but they still give off that effortlessly timeless vibe. I picked up a few linen-cotton blend ones from The Gap (such a steal!), and I’m also loving the options from Aritzia—and the scoop neck styles at J.Crew are super cute too!

They’re super versatile—wear them with denim shorts for a laid-back look, or dress them up with linen trousers and heeled sandals for something a bit more polished.

Basic Tank Top(s)

In the heat of summer, I find myself reaching for these neutral, basic tank tops from Everlane several times a week—they’re just so easy and breathable. And when the temps dip a bit, I love layering them under something light.

A simple black or white tank also has that effortlessly polished vibe, and you can instantly dress it up with a few delicate pendant necklaces.

These 3-pack tanks from Quince are also a great budget-friendly option!

Sleeveless Knit Top

A lightweight, sleeveless knit top is the elevated version of a tank top. It can easily be dressed up or down all summer long.

I recommend a muted color such as mist blue (very on trend for 2025), olive green, or butter yellow or a classic neutral color. This lightweight cashmere-blend shell top from J.Crew immediately caught my eye!

Summer Dress(es)

Summer dresses are where you can really have fun—there’s no wrong direction to go!

If you’re into neutrals, you can’t go wrong with a breezy white summer dress or a timeless black one in cotton, poplin, or linen. Want a bit more personality? Try polka-dot, classic stripe, or a couple of pretty floral options for a fresh pop, or try a trending color like this butter yellow beauty

I went with this classic black dress from Aritzia (I also love the look of this best-seller from J.Crew). It’s super versatile—I can throw it on with sneakers and a denim jacket for a casual day out, or dress it up with heeled sandals and some jewelry for a summer wedding or a relaxed afternoon at a winery

Poplin Skirt

Poplin skirts are very on-trend for 2025, which is why I added this breezy, lightweight staple to the capsule. This style of skirt can be both casual or dressed-up, and easily elevates any summer outfit.

The crisp fabric and flattering length make it perfect for everything from casual daytime looks to evenings out. Aritzia has some excellent options , and I love this one from Quince

Linen Shorts

Linen shorts strike the perfect balance between laid-back and polished. Dress them up with a simple tank, delicate jewelry, and heeled sandals, or keep it casual with a tee, comfy flats, and a woven tote—perfect for beach or lake days.

I’m a fan of the high-waisted linen shorts from Quince and the always-popular styles from J.Crew and Reformation.

Looking for more ways to style them? Check out some linen shorts outfit ideas here!

Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are a timeless summer staple you can wear on repeat all season. I’m partial to a vintage blue wash, but white or black denim are great options too for mixing it up.

If finding the right pair is always a challenge, I recommend the Everlane A-Line Shorts for their longer length, the Agolde Dame Shorts, or the Parker Long Short—they deliver on fit, comfort, and style.

Tailored Shorts

It’s a great idea to have one pair of shorts in a summer capsule that can be dressed up for a night out or brunch with friends. I love tailored shorts with a pleated detail as they are versatile and elevated – these best-selling Effortless Shorts from Aritzia are a perfect choice (as well as these affordable look-alikes from Quince)

Remember, if any of these items don’t feel practical to your lifestyle, swap them out for an item that does.

Lightweight Trousers

A light ivory or beige pair of linen trousers goes a long way in the summer. Dress them down with sneakers and a cardigan or up with heeled sandals and a blouse (I love these affordable trousers from H&M, this super popular style from Aritzia, and these Linen Pants from Quince).

The light color has a fresh summery feel that is very versatile. On the other hand, black is a great option too!

Vintage Wash Jeans

In my opinion, a staple in any capsule and any season, is a pair of lightly distressed vintage wash jeans. When you find the perfect pair, you’ll wear them multiple times a week!

I am a huge fan of the Agolde 90’s Jeans, Levi’s 501’s, Everlane Cheeky Jeans, and Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans. I also love these Citizens of Humanity Miro Jeans for a trendier look.

Off-White/Ecru Jeans

Similar to above, light jeans are a great staple for the summer months. I love the Everlane Barrel Jeans, Agolde 90’s off-white jeans (I’ll be wearing these a ton this summer!), and the Levi’s 501 originals in classic white.

One of my favorite ways to wear off-white denim in the summer is with a classic white tee and black sandals for a monochromatic look, or with a black tank and black heels for a chic date night vibe.

Swimsuit(s)

Let’s be real—summer just isn’t complete without some beach or pool time, right? Add one or two neutral, stylish swimsuits to your capsule, and you’ll be good to go!

If you’re tempted to stock up on a bunch of suits, consider simplifying with a few mix-and-match bikini tops and bottoms instead. I’m a big fan of Hunza G for their flattering, one-size-fits-all magic, and my Marysia scalloped-edge suit was definitely a splurge—but so worth it! I also adore this flattering Montce swimsuit.

For budget-friendly, H&M and Quince have great options too!

Sneakers

A great pair of white or ivory sneakers are a must for summer. I pair them with just about everything – jeans, shorts, dresses, etc.

There are several excellent options to consider including the Vionic Low Top Sneakers, Quince Classic Leather Sneakers, Quince Canvas Sneakers, and the Veronica Beard Riviera Sneakers

Leather Slides

One or two pairs of comfortable yet fashionable slides are essential to any capsule summer wardrobe, in my opinion. They can be paired with pretty much any outfit and will be your go-to for most summer days.

I recommend sticking with neutrals for versatility and making sure you choose a sturdy pair of sandals as you will definitely be wearing them a lot. The Roundabout Sandals from Poppy Barley are stylish and comfortable, and will last for years to come (use code: STYLEYOUROCCASION-25 for $25 off!). I also like the minimalist appeal of these budget-friendly Steve Madden slides.

Black Sandals

Black sandals are a timeless classic that add an extra polished appeal to any summer look. For 2025, slim and minimalistic leather flip flops are very on-trend, practical, and chic. They have a European vibe I love!

I adore the Jessie Slides from Reformation, and the Gap has a great vegan leather pair for under $50. I’ve linked more options above as well!

Heeled Sandals

For dressier occasions, weddings, and date nights, I included the stylish Reformation Serenity Sandals in the summer capsule, and I also love the Poppy Barley Lindsay heeled sandals. They are both comfortable and high quality. Lower on the budget range are these minimalist heels from Amazon.

Strappy sandals with a chunky heel combine style and comfort and are also great for walking on grassy areas – think outdoor weddings! Again, I recommend sticking with neutrals for versatility – black or nude are excellent!

Straw or Leather Tote Bag

When it comes to carrying all my essentials, I find that a tote bag is the perfect minimal and practical choice. In the summer months, I always go with a woven/straw/basket bag (I own the Anine Bing Rio tote, but added the bestselling J.Crew Straw Tote as a more affordable option to the capsule).

I think the basket style is versatile and practical for a day at the beach or lake or just for running errands. I’ve linked several great options above as well!

Crossbody Bag

This is the perfect bag that can hold just the essentials and not feel too clunky. If you are able to, I recommend investing more in accessories to elevate moderately priced clothing items in your capsule (I absolutely love my YSL Solferino Bag and have never regretted this purchase!).

That being said, if spending hundreds or thousands isn’t in your budget, then you’ve got to check out the Quince Patchwork Leather Crossbody Bag which converts easily to a clutch for evening!

Sunglasses, Hats, & Accessories

Lastly, adding in a selection of classy accessories to your capsule wardrobe will tie everything together.

A great pair of sunglasses (my Celine oval sunnies are my fave, but these are a crazy-good dupe!), neutral hair accessories like clips and scrunchies, dainty jewelry, and a baseball cap or straw sun hat are all subtle, classy pieces that are the cherry-on-top of all my great summer outfits.

(Exact product links listed in “What’s In My Capsule” section above!)

Beach Day

Above, I’ve combined the super flattering striped navy Hunza G swimsuit with denim shorts and a linen button-up shirt. The look is versatile enough to go from the beach or pool to lunch with friends!
