Rainy days are inevitable, but dressing for them can be tough! Get inspired with my list of fresh and modern rainy day outfit ideas that are sure to brighten the gloomiest days.
Rainy Day Outfit Ideas
It’s true that getting dressed when rain is in the forecast can be trickier as there are certain garments and fabrics (like silk, wool, or velvet) you want to skip in order to avoid ruining them. But whether it’s sprinkling or storming, know that you don’t have to sacrifice style to stay warm and dry—even on days when an umbrella and rain boots are necessary.
Chic Outfits For Rainy Weather
Scroll on to find some of my favorite rainy day outfits, as well as tips on how to balance style with practicality.
Black jeans, sweater + chunky boots.
If you see showers on the forecast, find refuge in this chic yet cozy outfit idea.
Keep it simple with black jeans, an oversized sweater, and chunky boots like these ones from Dr. Martens. These aren’t technically rain boots, but they’re just as durable as your favorite waterproof ones and are easy to style for school or off-duty days spent outside. I adore a trench coat, but don’t forget that an umbrella is the cherry on top of any rainy day ensemble.
Sweatpants, loafers + navy trench.
This rainy day outfit proves you can elevate even your comfiest sweats into a totally chic look. Recreate Claire’s outfit by pairing slim-fitting sweatpants (you don’t want anything too baggy) with a simple cardigan and loafers.
Make the look more fashion-forward by wearing your loafers with socks—a classic combination all the cool girls are sporting. In keeping with the rainy day, add in some blue hues with accessories or outerwear, such as a gorgeous navy trench coat.
Blazer, leggings + rain boots.
If you’re getting dressed on a rainy day and unsure where to start, build your outfit around dark colors rather than lighter shades. An all-black outfit – featuring leggings, a mock neck top, and a blazer – is ideal on a super rainy day because the color won’t show dirt or water splashes.
When it rains, it pours. If it’s torrential outside, be sure to opt for knee-high rain boots to keep your legs dry.
Leggings, sweatshirt + Chelsea boots.
The comfy combo of an oversized sweatshirt and leggings makes chilly rainy days more cozy, especially when you need to head outside for work, school, or errands. Keep this outfit chic yet functional with Chelsea boots, a trench coat, and a hat to protect your hair. Matching your hat to your sweatshirt makes the look feel more polished, in my opinion.
Style tip: A recurring garment you’ll see throughout these rainy day outfit ideas is leggings! A pair of leggings will be your best friend when the weather is unpredictable. I suggest investing in a good pair of black leggings that you can build countless rainy day outfits around—stick with black because it’s the most versatile and practical color for damp weather.
Quilted jacket + lug sole boots.
If you don’t want to wear a trench coat, try a quilted coat instead. This outerwear piece is perfect when the weather turns dreary as it keeps you warm, dry, and oh-so-stylish. I’d wear this on chilly winter days with rain (or flurries) in the forecast.
I love the combination of the quilted jacket and lug-sole boots, which offer added protection from puddles. Throw on some chic accessories, like sunnies and a crossbody bag, to complete the look.
Baggy jeans, faux leather jacket + dad sneakers
Yes, wearing a leather jacket in the rain is possible. But, if you want to be on the safe side, opt for a faux or vegan leather jacket instead. I’m obsessed with the casual 90s vibes in Grace’s gloomy weather OOTD.
Throw on a white tee (or tank) and ultra-baggy jeans to recreate the look. Layer a sweater on top so you can see the white tee peeking out—this is a super subtle yet stylish touch! Finally, put on your faux leather jacket and statement dad sneakers that bring a relaxed flair.
Matching sweat set, sneakers + trench coat.
A stormy day is the perfect excuse to wear sweats, in my opinion. Opt for a matching sweat set instead of mismatched pieces to make your loungewear more luxe. Trust me, you’ll look more put-together but feel extra comfy. Up the ante even more with a chic trench coat and colorful sneakers.
White tee, casual trousers + baseball hat.
Don’t let rain showers keep you from your plans! This is one of my favorite outfits for rainy weather, especially when the weather isn’t exactly hot or cold.
On those in-between days, make getting dressed easy by starting with a tee shirt and trousers. Make your outfit waterproof with a lined trench coat that has a relaxed fit. I think chunky dad sandals are so cool and great for humid spring and summer days, but you could switch them for waterproof boots or sneakers.
Striped sweater, jeans + boots.
You can easily turn your everyday look into a stylish rainy-day-approved outfit with a few subtle changes. I love how our Editor-in-chief always reaches for her fave straight-leg jeans and a cozy sweater (a striped pattern will forever be chic).
When it’s drizzling outside, she will simply swap sneakers for her Poppy Barley Chelsea Boots, which are the perfect rainy day shoe, in my opinion. A long trench coat brings a “quiet luxury” aesthetic to the look, but you could opt for a waterproof raincoat instead.
Wide-leg jeans, bomber jacket + cap.
This outfit for rainy weather gives off an effortlessly cool vibe with its baggy jeans and white tee. The base of this outfit is super simple, but adding accessories instantly transforms this “basic” outfit.
I’d start with an oversized jacket, like this black bomber, that will keep you warm when the forecast is damp and add a stylish layer to your overall look. Accessorize with a belt, chic sunglasses, and a crossbody bag. Extra points if you pop on a baseball cap.
Cable knit sweater, white jeans + tote bag.
Itching to wear white on a rainy day? You totally can—as long as the weather isn’t too torrential. In this look, Maddie paired white cotton pants with a white tee layered with a chunky striped cardigan and minimalist jewelry. Ugg boots are a great shoe choice for crisp, cold weather but could be swapped for waterproof boots if needed.
Don’t forget the ultimate rainy day accessory, an umbrella!
Hoodie, cargo pants + sneakers.
Give your camel trench coat a break and opt for a chic gray one instead. Play into the cool tones with a white hoodie and dark wash cargo pants, one of my favorite fashion trends of 2024. I love the layered look of a hoodie with a trench coat but feel free to wear a white tee instead if it’s warmer where you live.
As for shoes, Samira opted for Adidas Sambas – my go-to sneaker – which add an element of fun to this gloomy weather ensemble.
Leggings, fisherman knit + trench coat.
On a dreary day, this outfit is my go-to. Nothing beats the comfort of a cozy knit and your favorite leggings.
To instantly elevate this sporty chic combo, throw on a camel trench coat – a classic rainy day item. Knee-high rain boots or waterproof combat boots would look amazing with this outfit, but above, Christal opted for neutral New Balance 574 sneakers to stick with the sporty aesthetic.
Black trench coat, white jeans + platform boots.
Still looking for more rainy day outfit ideas? You’ll love this next look.
Black and white is a classic combination that never fails to look chic. Next time it’s sprinkling, pair white denim jeans with a coordinating black top, boots, and accessories. Play up the day’s moody vibes with a long black trench coat that won’t get ruined by the rain.
Switching your old faithful rain boots with platform boots always makes for a stylish upgrade, in my opinion. Finish the look off with a statement necklace and sunglasses for an outfit that feels on-trend yet timeless
Leather jacket, knit pants + Ugg boots.
When you want to feel extra cozy, wear knitted pants with a warm jacket on top. If it’s just lightly drizzling outside, a leather jacket is a great outerwear option. Otherwise, opt for a waterproof jacket or trench coat.
These platform Uggs are cute and comfy, but they’ll help you avoid puddles, too. I also adore bold accessories, like this cherry red scarf, which act like sunshine on a gloomy day.
Cropped sweatshirt, trousers + sneakers.
Last up on my outfits for rainy weather is this effortlessly modern look. The cropped hoodie and comfortable sneakers bring a cool-girl vibe that balances the elegance of the trousers. Adding a baseball cap and vintage-looking trench coat will keep you dry but also bring texture and dimension to the all-black look.
I hope you loved this list of rainy day outfit ideas and feel inspired the next time the weather calls for some drizzle!
