How To Dress Old Money On A Budget: Fall/Winter
The old-money aesthetic is one of my most-loved fashion trends as of late. Old money fashion is all about capturing a timeless, refined aesthetic. So classic wardrobe staples like a trench coat, knit pieces, blazers or lady jackets, pleated trousers, silk midi skirts, and elevated accessories are a must for this look.
Fortunately for all of us, channeling this sophistication and elegance doesn’t have to come at the expense of your wallet! While I do believe you should invest in chic, timeless pieces, you can often find perfect alternatives at a lower price.
Below, I’ve listed the best old-money staples to invest in for fall and winter, which I’ve included in the capsule graphic above. Plus, I’ve created a plethora of chic and classy old-money outfits and sourced perfect looks from top fashion influencers to inspire you.

Trench Coat
shop trenches:
A trench coat is a no-brainer when it comes to the old-money look! This piece is especially great in a transitional season like fall when the weather isn’t too cold yet. Opt for a dark tan color in the fall and winter, or try navy, black, or army green for a chic vibe.
To stay on budget, look for an affordable cotton trench at H&M, Mango, Dynamite, or Nordstrom – I’ve linked several great options above!
This outfit on @anoukyve above is chic, classic, and has an old-money vibe I love! The look is casual but the accessories and long trench elevate the jeans.
Long Wool Coat
shop coats:
A long wool (or more affordable wool blend) coat has an understated elegance that’s excellent for an old-money outfit. This classic, elevated piece will keep you warm in the fall and winter and layers over everything.
I love the look of a cream coat which gives an old-money vibe like on @kateehutchins above. But you can also go for camel (like @cocobeautea), dark brown, charcoal, or black.
If you can snag a wool coat on sale, definitely do – this piece will last forever! On the other hand, a wool-blend jacket like this one from Nordstrom is a great budget-friendly option as well. Or, this wool-look coat from H&M.
Plaid Blazer
shop blazers:
A plaid blazer or peacoat is a versatile piece that’s considered a staple in old-money fashion. My favorite thing about this timeless layering piece is how you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion.
Above, @kateehutchins wears her plaid blazer with a white button-down shirt, skirt, and tall boots. This old money outfit is perfect for fall!
Faux Fur Jacket
shop fur jackets:
This style of jacket is great to have in your fall or winter old-money wardrobe! It’s perfect for chilly days when you need a little extra warmth and gives major “mob wife” vibes.
To stay on a budget, opt for faux fur, I’ve linked tons of great options above!
I adore this outfit above on @livia_auer. It has a chic old-money aesthetic and her faux fur coat looks excellent with a cream sweater and black accessories.
Tweed Jacket
shop jackets:
A tweed (or tweed-look) jacket adds a formal and sophisticated feel to any outfit, so this is definitely a piece you want to keep in any old money-inspired capsule. It can be paired with tailored pants for a refined look or with jeans for a more casual vibe.
Tweed pieces likely make you think of expensive Chanel, but you would be surprised at how affordable a tweed jacket can actually be! See the options I’ve linked above.
Knit Sweaters
shop sweaters:
When it comes to creating outfits with an old money aesthetic in the fall and winter, a selection of knit sweaters goes a long way. In this capsule, I’ve included a plush cashmere turtleneck (that’s surprisingly affordable), a cable knit crewneck sweater, and a classic cardigan.
All of these can be worn with tailored trousers, jeans, leggings, or slip skirts for a casual or dressy vibe.
Above, @heloise.guillet wears a cable knit sweater with ivory trousers and chic brown accessories for an undeniably old money feel.
Long Sleeve Top
shop tops:
I love having a long-sleeve slim-fit turtleneck for quiet luxury outfits! This is fantastic as a cool-weather layer or can be worn alone with pants or a skirt for an elegant ensemble.
Knit Dress
shop dresses:
It almost goes without saying that a knit dress belongs in an old-money wardrobe since this style of dress is commonly associated with class and sophistication. I recommend a long-sleeved, midi, or maxi length for fall and winter.
To stay on budget, opt for fabric blends such as a cashmere or wool blend. This rib-knit dress from H&M is an excellent price, as is this affordable cashmere-blend dress from Quince.
Pleated Trousers
shop trousers:
Pleated trousers are probably one of the most elegant bottoms you can have in your closet, so obviously, I have to include them as a staple for a quiet luxury capsule. And while they’re incredibly classy, they can still be dressed casually for brunch or shopping with friends.
Classic Blue Jeans
shop jeans:
Blue jeans absolutely have a place in old-money fashion. These pants are definitely timeless, and if you pair them with elevated tops, shoes, and accessories – there’s no doubt that you can incorporate them into a high-end outfit.
Also, they are totally affordable! My favorite are the classic Levi’s 501 originals which are less than $100 and often go on sale!
Slip Skirt
shop skirts:
A slip skirt is perfect for adding an elevated and feminine feel to any outfit. The silky look and slightly fitted silhouette of this piece are so refined, and it’s also versatile enough to wear with any dressy fall or winter ensemble.
Black Leggings
shop leggings:
Like tailored pants, black leggings instantly upgrade any outfit and give it that quiet luxury feel with the right footwear. The best option for fall and winter for an old money aesthetic, is to pair black leggings with tall riding boots like @lovisabarkman does above or opt for chic black loafers.
This equestrian-inspired outfit looks luxurious but can easily be recreated on a budget!
Classic Footwear
Classic footwear is a must to pair with classic clothing! I find that simple but elegantly designed shoes are excellent in old-money fashion – and opting for neutrals is also a great choice for creating a classy aesthetic.
These are the types of footwear that I would recommend for the quiet luxury look:
- Patent leather or suede pumps – black, brown, or ivory
- Ankle boots – black, brown, or tan
- Tall riding boots – black or brown
- Loafers – black or brown
Crossbody Bag
A crossbody is definitely a staple accessory here! Leather or faux leather has an undeniably sophisticated look, and finding a crossbody purse with gold-toned hardware will easily elevate your outfit. I suggest a crossbody if you want to be hands-free during an outing or if you want to add a laid-back vibe to your ensemble.
My top pick is this affordable Italian leather box bag from Quince that looks expensive but is priced at less than $150. If you want to spend less than $50, try this chic crossbody from Mango.
Clutch
A clutch is effortlessly chic and perfect for fall and winter – especially the holiday season! I love the minimal and chic look of this cream leather pouch from Quince, and Nordstrom also has some great affordable options I’ve linked above.
Tote Bag
Totes are ideal during the fall and winter when you are on the go and need to carry all of your essentials! I think neutral tones are best with this accessory – so opt for brown, beige, cream, black, or classic white when choosing a tote.
Glove & Scarf
In the fall and winter when the weather brings a chill, a luxe-looking scarf and gloves will give you an old money aesthetic and keep you toasty warm. I love this affordable pair of cashmere gloves from Quince and the matching cashmere wrap scarf with an expensive look (for less!).
I’ve also linked more affordable options above!
Accessories
And lastly, you can’t forget about the little details that bring an outfit together! When it comes to looking old money on a budget, elevated accessories are essential. The accessories above are the finishing touches that will put your quiet luxury outfit over the top. I suggest having at least one option for each category on the list below:
- brown belt
- black belt
- jewelry
- watch
- sunglasses
Scroll through the affordable accessories I’ve linked above to find your perfect match.
Old money fashion has an elegant, expensive aesthetic, but you don’t need to go all out on an old money wardrobe! Use the budget-friendly outfit ideas in my guide to add chic pieces to your closet this fall and winter.
